Magical Babassu Face Oil

Multifunctional oil for dry and malnourished skin

The Story

Creamy, velveteen, light-feel Magical Babassu Face Oil is all about hydrating, softening, and smoothing the skin without the heavy or oily feel of some richer, thicker face oils meant for drier or more mature skin types. We recommend this oil as your first choice among our products for stubbornly dry or rough facial skin for all ages.

The scent of this facial oil comes foremost from the undeodorized, virgin babassu oil, which is a little nutty and earthy. Then, softer, sweet florals have been added in a small amount: forest-honey-like, delicate mimosa, and aquatic, fresh pink lotus (I take a whiff of my properly diluted pink lotus and want to swoon).

Tobacco absolute derived from the leaves and processed to be nicotine free is a highly praised ingredient in perfumery, as it lends a rich, complex, leathery, moist-sweet natural fragrance element that has, in my experience, grounding aromatherapy benefits; it makes one's spirit feel full and complete. Haitian vetiver is a root whose scent I would describe as “dry bark and roots” (in a good way). Calming to the spirit, the vetiver anchors the elusive, more fleeting scents of pink lotus and mimosa.

The key ingredient here is hand-extracted, cold-press, unrefined babassu oil from Brazil, with its light and powdery feel, "dry butter" consistency, meltability on contact with the skin, and powerful redness- and dryness-reducing properties. This unique oil-butter heals and soothes, relieves itching or other discomfort, and also has gentle antibacterial properties, rendering it noncomedogenic (appropriate for acne-prone or pore-clogging-prone skin types).

Babassu oil is also often described as slightly cooling, and this quality makes this ingredient perfect for a range of inflammatory skin conditions, from eczema to rosacea and psoriasis. It minimizes pores and decreases puffiness.

Brazil nut oil, with its exceptionally high linoleic acid content, is highly beneficial for the care of wrinkled, mature, neglected, and dry to very dry skin. It is also rich in vitamins E, A, B, and C as well as many minerals, especially selenium. It nourishes on a deeper level and improves firmness, and helps the skin to recover its healthy coloring over time.

Sacha inchi from Chile is highly praised for its skin compatibility and high content of Omega 3s. It is a thinner oil that is very hydrating and wrinkle reducing. Sacha inchi provides a high moisture factor, complementing the emollient and skin-tissue-healing components of Magical Babassu.

Pracaxi pod oil is a sacred healing oil known in the Amazon rainforest as “jungle suture” because it regenerates and repairs skin tissue powerfully and quickly. It improves the appearance of scars and is anti-acne.

Our Fair Trade shea butter from West Africa (totally unrefined and hand-extracted) penetrates dry skin well and, again, feels more powdery than oily. Shea butter softens the skin, improves its elasticity, repairs, and protects from environmental factors (including even some natural built-in SPF). While using shea butter alone is not feasible because it stays quite hard at room temperature, as a component of a face oil, it lends the oil body, incredible nonoily creaminess, and its skin-healing benefits.

The consistency of Magical Babassu will range from almost liquid to semi-solid depending on your ambient temperature. Make sure to store it inside a cabinet to protect the precious unrefined oils from light.

How does this face oil compare to the other face oils we offer?

Magical Babassu Face Oil is the most emollient of our facial oils. It is most appropriate for dry to very dry skin, sensitive skin, winter skin, and eczema, alone or mixed with Ferns and Moss Serum (for maximum healing and repair) or Ruby Face Oil (for added phytonutrients and firming benefits).

Ruby Face Oil is one of our beststellers, a light yet powerful and nonirritating oil that absorbs very fast, is noncomedogenic, and feels very light even on a hot and humid day. It is one of our top choices for sun damage repair and for treatment of scars.

Magical Babassu is more geared toward softening the skin and soothing irritations in sensitive skin. Ferns and Moss Serum is thicker, but is a dry oil, while Magical Babassu is emollient. Ferns and Moss includes anti-acne ingredients.

If you are deciding between Magical Babassu and Ferns and Moss Serum, choose Magical Babassu if dryness and sensitive skin are your top concerns, but choose Ferns and Moss Serum if you are foremost seeking healing and repair and your skin is congestion prone.

Black Locust Firming Concentrate is another rich oil we offer that feels quite active and is also noncomedogenic. Black Locust is focused on firming, pore minimizing, and maintaining hydration throughout the day or night, while Magical Babassu is more geared toward softening the skin and soothing irritations in sensitive skin.

For dry and damaged or dry and mature skin, you may want to test all our oils. Ruby is most popular in the summer months and Magical Babassu, Ferns and Moss, and Black Locust are most popular in the colder months.

Calm . . . The one word I choose to express how this makes my skin feel. It is instantly soothing, highly moisturizing but not greasy. I don't know how you manage all that in one product, but it is fast growing into a favorite of mine. To me it smells both nutty and slightly floral. I'm getting another one as we type!

Shake periodically to remix. Massage a few drops or more into freshly cleansed, moist skin day and night. Use alone or over a facial oil primer—an aloe-based primer will merge with the oil and facilitate its absorption. Use more if you feel drier and less if your skin is moderately dry (oily zones can be omitted entirely). This serum can be used on the face, neck, décolleté, and under eyes. Store away from direct light exposure to protect the unrefined oils from light.

Freshness guaranteed for 6 months. Full sizes 1 fl. oz. (30 ml) or 0.5 fl. oz. (15 ml); travel/sample size 0.17 fl. oz. (5 ml).

Due to the very high cost of our ingredients and the labor-intensive (highly time consuming) small-batch production process, we are unable to accept returns of opened or unopened products at this time. But most products have a sample size option for purchase, so we encourage you to buy a sample first to ensure that the product suits your skin's needs and that you enjoy the texture, fragrance, and healing properties.

Leaves skin velvety soft!

Magical Babassu Face Oil is a creamy light-feel oil that leaves skin velvety soft and smooth. Upon application, the face oil feels quite rich but the oil actually sinks into skin really well. The scent is nutty, earthy, and delicately floral (my boyfriend actually says I smell pleasantly of green tea when I apply this)... a really unique scent, but more importantly, I love the way my skin feels after the oil absorbs and when I wake up the next morning. Definitely one of my favorite Earthwise products!

Good for dry skin

I recently went for a autumn/winter holiday and coming from a humid country and with dry skin, I was armed with extra moisturing face cream to combat the dry weather. I decided to bring this sample along my trip & brought it with me to the airplane. My face was so dry that I could see some skin peeling & I decided to put it on before going to sleep. After I woke up, the dry spots were gone! Didn't expect it to work it's magic that fast :)

Eye Butter

I know this product is not marketed specifically for use under the eyes, but that's how I use it. For my combo-dry skin type, this oil is a bit too rich to use generously over the entire face. I do however sometimes apply this to areas of the skin that get too dry or flaky. When applied in the PM, the oil has time to absorb, effectively healing and providing relief from dryness for the next day. The relief seems long-lasting since it's usually a few days before I have to repeat the process. Yet for the most part, I use this oil under the eyes every night and morning. Two drops is sufficient to cover both eyes. The creamy, buttery finish of this oil is perfect for my tired dry under eyes. For this purpose, I much prefer this oil to the passion eye serum. It is more emollient and I think the carrot and tomato seed oil, along with the soothing babassu oil contain many properties more appropriate for my under eyes. I also prefer the nutty smell of this product to the passion eye serum, the latter of which smells a lot like hot sauce to me. In any case, I will not be without this luxurious oil this winter season. It is comforting to know that I can have true hydration and healing at my fingertips whenever I most need it. Thank you again, Earthwise Beauty.

not enough hydration

It smells good, the oil is too light, not enough to moisturize

Thank you for your feedback, Gillian. For all readers: that there is a wide range of dry skin types, not just dry skin. Someone may perceive their skin as dry or dehydrated, but looking at the larger population, this person may only rate 2 on a scale of 10, 1 being mildly dry and 10 being extremely, stubbornly dry and 'porous.' We have been selling Magical Babassu Face Oil for three years, and we have received feedback that it is actually too rich for most customers with oily, combination, acne-prone, and normal skin. It works very well on most dry skin types and we have had very positive feedback from customers with dry skin with eczema. If Magical Babassu feels light to you, it probably means your skin dryness rates toward 8-10 on the dryness scale. I would suggest looking into boosting water-type hydration through an aloe-based product, and then using a hydrating oil (such as Ruby Face Oil), and then consider topping it all with a balm that seals the moisture in. Magical Babassu is not strongly sealing, it is more of a breathable emollient oil. -Ava
Light and hydrating

I've been using magical babassu for the past few weeks, and it's my new favorite facial oil. I have dry skin with mild rosacea and an oily T-zone, so it's hard to find oils that I can use on my whole face. This one is hydrating for my cheeks and light enough to use on the oily parts of my face. It feels so smooth too. I'll be using it for a while!
