Farizad's Veil Sun Reflector

Multitasking powder booster to mix with oils and balms

The Story

Farizad's Veil is Ava's take on a sun shield formula for the contemporary woman: luxurious, non-pore-clogging, light, breathable, flexible, and with a beautiful, sophisticated natural scent. It is a liberation of sun protection from its typically oily carrier medium. Since most of us have a carefully researched and tested skin care ritual for our skin type, we don't want to add a layer of sunscreen cream into the mix, which could clog the pores or feel unbreathable or heavy.

With Farizad's Veil, you use your own beloved daytime facial oil and add just a bit of Farizad's Veil powder to it. It mixes right in and offers a range of protection options depending on how much of the powder you use, without inadvertently adding anything undesirable.

The fragrance, product name, and label design were inspired by Farizad, a heroine from Arabian Nights. Determined, a believer in destiny and in her intuition's voice, Farizad had the smile of the rose and cried real pearls!

Benefits

The sun protective ingredient here is highest-grade, minimally processed non-nano and uncoated zinc oxide (particle size 325 nm), which is the healthiest, safest, and most reliable sun shield ingredient available today (the only other nontoxic option is titanium dioxide, but it does not offer full-spectrum UV protection; all other sun protection options are chemical compounds). Nano particles are controversial and it remains to be proven whether they are safe for our health, and we specifically used uncoated zinc oxide as the most unrefined, most natural version (coated zinc oxide means that the particles have been coated with another substance). Go here to read in depth about our careful selection of zinc oxide for this product.

Zinc oxide has so many advantages as a sun shield: it can be safely used around the eyes, and it is a physical sun reflector, so it works immediately after application and makes one feel (a little) cooler when in the sun. It is biodegradable and safe for coral reefs and other marine life (it settles on the sea floor without causing any harm or entering into chemical reactions).

There are several skin care benefits from zinc oxide itself, from anti-acne and anti-inflammatory action to protective and soothing properties. The anti-acne benefits only shine if you use zinc oxide in a noncomedogenic, acne-skin-appropriate facial oil or serum.

The second ingredient in Farizad's Veil is pure powdered aloe, which performs many functions here, from moisturizing, skin damage preventing, and skin damage correcting to cooling, repairing, and soothing. With how many skin care products do you get to wear the actual powdered herbs on your skin all day? That is a mask session in itself. The aloe also softens the stark white color of the zinc oxide, making it less-than-typically skin whitening.

Farizad’s Veil can be used all year long, not only to shield from the sun, but also to soothe skin irritations, reduce redness, speed healing of acne breakouts, and decrease hyperpigmentation.

The scent is very feminine yet assertive (reminiscent of a woman with confidence and trust in her inner guidance): Moroccan roses, precious and rare pink Indian champaca flower (with a tea and honey element), rose geranium, Madagascar geranium leaves, and a delicate frankincense that has an orange undertone and is not the masculine type, yet has an amber-like resin component. As with all our products, all the aroma components are fully disclosed in the ingredients list and are artisan-distilled, small-batch, therapeutic-grade essential oils and absolutes, organic or responsibly wildcrafted.

The fragrance will preserve well in the glass container for at least six months. If for any reason you would rather have an unscented powder, leave the jar for a few days with the lid off, just lightly covered with fabric or a paper towel to protect the product from dust.

Aside from keeping my skin matte, it slightly acts as a blur filter for your face and has anti-inflammatory properties… for the days I will be under the sun, especially during Summer, this will be the only SPF product I turn to.

Ingredients

Non-nano uncoated zinc oxide 94% (Canada); Aloe barbadensis leaf powder*, Rosa centifolia (rose) absolute (Morocco; organic whenever available), pink Michelia champaca L. absolute (India)†, organic Pelargonium graveolens (geranium bourbon) oil (Madagascar), Pelargonium roseum (rose geranium) oil*, Boswellia sacra (frankincense) oil†.

*Certified organic. †Responsibly wildcrafted.

All absolutes are hexane free whenever available.

Certified cruelty free, vegan, handcrafted, small batch.

Directions

Measure out a single-use amount of the powder (1/32 to 1/16 teaspoon) into a ceramic bowl and add from several drops to half a dropper of your favorite daytime face oil or oil-based serum. Mix with your fingertips to create a thin, smooth lotion. Apply onto the skin, rubbing in gently with your fingertips to minimize the whitening effect and to distribute evenly. Add extra drops of your oil directly onto your face if needed to achieve an even distribution. We especially recommend using our Ruby Face Oil to mix with Farizad's Veil, as that oil is lightweight, sun-protective, fast-absorbing, and highly appropriate for daytime use in the summer.

Depending on the quantity used, our testing shows that Farizad's Veil provides sun protection roughly equal to a sunscreen with an SPF of 20 to 40 (the more powder used, the higher the sun protection).

For a light-feel, “second-skin” type of sun-ray protector, mix Farizad’s Veil with a light, moisturizing face oil or oil-based serum. This sunscreen will work well mixed with any of Earthwise Beauty’s facial oils and with  Ferns and Moss Face Serum It should work with other brands’ moisturizers if they contain oils, but not with gels or gel-creams. Test a few different addition options and quantities to determine what works best for you. You may even mix Farizad’s Veil with your liquid foundation or tinted moisturizer. For a simple, noncomedogenic, and very pleasing result, try mixing with pure organic cold-press unrefined jojoba or argan oil.

Since Farizad's Veil is a physical barrier, protecting the skin from external factors including the sun's rays, it doesn't matter whether you implement it in your moisturizer or makeup layer. Zinc oxide offers nice coverage and mattifying properties, so you may find you don't even need to use a foundation with Farizad's Veil.

There is a lot of controversy and often confusing information out there about the effectiveness of different types of sun shield ingredients. We take your health and safety very seriously, and an extensive amount of research went into the making of our Farizad’s Veil formula. You can learn more about the uncoated, non-nano zinc oxide we chose to use for our active ingredient here.  Avoid inhaling the powder.

Freshness guaranteed for 6 months. Full size 0.37 oz. (10.5 g/15 ml jar); travel/sample size 0.15 oz. (4.2 g/5 ml jar).

Due to the very high cost of our ingredients and the labor-intensive (highly time consuming) small-batch production process, we are unable to accept returns of opened or unopened products at this time. But most products have a sample size option for purchase, so we encourage you to buy a sample first to ensure that the product suits your skin's needs and that you enjoy the texture, fragrance, and healing properties.

The search is over

After trying countless sunscreens over the years, at best breaking out horrendously and at worst getting a chemical burn, I have finally found the PERFECT sunscreen. No joke. When I first applied Farizad's Veil, it was like the sky opened up, birds sang, and a great hush fell upon the earth (definitely exaggerating, but OMG this stuff is too good!). I mix a bit in with rose hip seed oil, and it dries BEAUTIFULLY, every time. No acne, no greasiness, just an amazing daily sunscreen. There's certainly a white cast, but fortunately I have super pale skin, so it acts almost as a color correcting cream on me. My concealer is in the bin. The only downside I could possibly think of is that it makes my teeth look a bit yellow in comparison, haha. Seriously, I don't think I've ever been happier with a product.

A total win!

Farizad's Veil along with Ruby Facial Oil has upped my sun protection game to a whole new level. Minimally processed, non-nano, uncoated zinc oxide and powdered aloe leaves make up the majority of this powder sunscreen. Like many others, I was sceptical of whether this would protect me from the harsh (Mumbai) sun, not to mention the high levels of air pollution. But boy, does it deliver! Granted that mixing a sprinkle (1/32 of a teaspoon works for me) of this powder with Ruby is a task as most of us are used to squirting sunscreen out of a tube but believe me, the results are totally worth it and I'm a convert for life! I've been using Farizad's Veil every day since I got it in theboxwalla June box and I've only used about 1/8th of the product. This will definitely last me a while. Farizad's also blurs minor imperfections and mattifies my oily-combo skin. Sometimes when I'm left with a white cast (in case I use less of Ruby), I use a touch of tinted setting powder to blur out the white cast. Now, I go without foundation on most days. You can even mix Farizad's Veil with your body moisturiser and turn it into a body sunscreen. And since this is a physical sunscreen, you don't have to wait 15 mins before stepping out in the sun. Total win! Together, both Ruby and Farizad's Veil have been able to get rid of the dark patch of tan which I'm always left with after long sun exposure. I just need to use these consistently to ensure my forehead and overall skin stays its natural colour and doesn't get adversely affected by the sun.

More than an spf!

This is a wonderful product and I am more than happy that I bought it. I would say that this is a skincare product that not only protects from the sun but also takes care of the skin as well in a sense that it heals and protects it. It smoothes the texture of it and it makes it look better than it is. It's gentle and soothing enough, it helps skin staying matte but not dry and I also think that it works very well as a primer underneath make up. I use it with a lightweight oil, I also tried it with Ruby oil which came as a sample with and I really liked it. And it will last me for a very long time so that's a bonus too. Very pleased so far I must say!

Excellent sun protection! Doubles as a foundation!

I love applying Farizad's Veil on my skin every morning. I had to experiment with the right amount of the powder and also the right oil to go with it. I was using Ferns and Moss but it turned out to be a little thick to be effectively spread out on my skin. So as per Ava's recommendation, I got Tangerine Skies which I love by the way. And I also got Green Leaves too (heavenly scent). So I mix these two oils (4 drops each) with a tiny amount of Farizad and mix it really well. It needs to be a very thin paste. More oily and less paste-y. Then only it will spread on your skin evenly. In the beginning, I was not sure how much powder to use which would not show like a thin whitewash on my dark skin, which normally every sunscreen makes me look. But over the time, I experimented with the amount of powder and the drops of oils and now I have the perfect recipe down to get the healthy, glowing look every morning. The first time I went on a bike ride in a scorching sun wearing Farizad, I was a little skeptical about its effectiveness with regard to suntan which I absolutely like to avoid at any day. So I carried my heavy-duty sunscreen with me just in case I needed reapplying. But Farizad held up really well for over three hours on a very hot afternoon (think low 90s). I never carried another sunscreen ever again.. And it does not bother my acne-prone skin. A huge bonus! Thank you Ava for a wonderful product!
